Classical “Fachwerkhaus”
Those who have visited Western European countries: Germany, Austria, France, England, the Netherlands may have noticed houses with a wooden frame was visible from the outside, and its structure resembled a checkered or patterned pattern with struts, struts, window openings, balconies, corner turrets, and other details. The cellular rectangular openings of these houses (in England they are known as half-timbered houses) are filled with materials that act as insulation, from brick to a mixture of adobe, shingles, linen, straw, and other aggregates that can be plastered and whitewashed. These are classic half-timbered houses. They come in different sizes, architecture, number of floors (up to 5 floors) types, because this technology has been actively developed over several centuries from about the 12th century to the present day ...
Modern half-timbered houses
Modern half-timbered houses are distinguished by: a) minimalist design b) fewer storeys (2 less than 3 floors); c) more technological equipment. Today, glued wood is used for construction, without defects, wall openings can be closed with energy-saving glazing, glued laminated timber or facade insulation systems. The current version also has a simple architecture, more chalet-like than gothic, with many architectural features on the façade and roof, and the energy savings here are maximized.

Two Common Fachwerk Assembly Methods

XII century - Method of long pillars Fachwerk technology developed from simple to complex. So in the XII century, the supporting structure was assembled using the “long pillar method”. Houses were rarely higher than two or three floors (up to 9m). The height of solid massive wooden pillars and structural rigidity, for such buildings, was enough. |
XV century - Method of short pillars When in the XIV-XV centuries. the height of the street house reached 4-5 floors (12-15m), then a change was made in the designs and the “short pole method” appeared, as more promising with many possibilities. |
Common features of ancient and modern designs
On the advantages and disadvantages of half-timbered technology.
Benefits
Any half-timbered house has a distinct individuality. This is a peculiar architectural style. Each manufacturer of such houses makes them in their own way, making upgrades and improvements due to which this technology is developing to this day. The frame remains visible, inside and out. It is often distinguished by a contrasting color with the facade (like the classic version), which gives a special character and style to the whole building. This is a light house, the load on the ground is minimal, therefore, a reinforced foundation is not required.
The use of glued and bent-glued architectural elements. Modern architecture often tends to use non-linear design. This is a trend of the 21st century, the development of which will continue in the future. Half-timbered technology for the implementation of this style is very suitable. The combinations of wood, glass, stone, open systems of supports and beams inherent in this style are organic in this design.
Strength and durability of structures. Today, glued beams are used for the supporting frame of the house, and glued wood provides stability and strength to the entire structure. Half-timbered houses are durable. They have centuries of experience in improvement and their service life can reach 500 years.
Ecology. All building materials used by our company are environmentally friendly and provide a high level of comfort and safety for their residents.
Energy saving. Today, half-timbered houses are equipped with the most modern energy saving systems, and are able to economically use energy resources, which are constantly growing in price.
You can move in immediately after construction is completed. The glued wooden frame is initially assembled from dry wood and has a stable shape and geometry. Turnkey construction lasts no more than six months, you can move into the house immediately after the completion of work, since the building does not shrink.
Disadvantages
Of course, fachwerk has its drawbacks. One of them is very significant, which comes from its own advantages.
High price. This type of house includes high-tech elements of architecture and equipment, high-quality materials and the involvement of highly qualified personnel. This level of work of building materials and equipment is highly valued and cannot be too cheap. However, in the premium segment there is a way to save money. How to do this without sacrificing quality and energy saving is described in detail here.
High demands on the skill of the working staff. The assembly of the load-bearing frame is carried out with high precision, since the entire frame will remain visible. Mistakes must not be made during its installation, otherwise the appearance, heat saving will suffer, the parameters and dimensions of the adjacent nodes may be violated.
