It is a tree with a very beautiful red-brown wood and small, often not homogeneous, dark patches or streaks. In the Fiji it sometime was considered sacred. Merbau is extremely solid and sturdy tree, much harder than oak and even teak. In the Philippines it is the standard of hardness and durability.

Merbau wood is waterproof, is not exposed to the fungus, mildew and will not eat bugs and other insects. Found that tree grow in Madagascar, but the main source of products from merbau is New Guinea.
